Nikolaos Vassilas received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1983 and his M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees also in Electrical Engineering from University of Minnesota in 1987 and 1990 respectively. He is currently a Professor at the Department of Informatics and Computer Engineering, University of West Attica, Greece. In the period 1992–99 he has been a research associate at the Neural Networks Laboratory, Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications, NCSR “Demokritos”. In 1993 he has been a post-doctoral researcher at the Micro-informatics Laboratory of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He has been head of the Computer Programming Sector as well as head of the former Department of Informatics of T.E.I. of Athens. From 2016 to 2020 he was the Director of the Joint Greek-French Master Degree Program “Informatics, Image Synthesis and Graphics Design” which is in collaboration with the Department of Informatics, University of Limoges, France and since 2019 he is the Director of the Intelligent Knowledge, Image & Information Systems reseach Laboratory (ISLab). He has 70 publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings and his research work has received more than 350 citations. He has participated in a number of European and national (co-funded by the European Union) research programs in two of which he was the co-ordinator. He has been a reviewer in many international scientific journals and a member either of the Organizing or the Program Committees of various international and national scientific conferences. He is a former or active member of the National Technical Chamber of Greece, the IEEE (Computational Intelligence and Systems, Man and Cybernetics Societies), the Hellenic Society of Artificial Intelligence and the Greek Computer Society.
